Antimicrobial Activity Enhancement of Poly(ether sulfone) Membranes by in Situ Growth of ZnO Nanorods

Abstract: Composite poly(ether sulfone) membranes integrated with ZnO nanostructures either directly blended or grown in situ have enhanced antibacterial activity with improved functionality in reducing the biofouling in water treatment applications. The pore structure and surface properties of the composite were studied to investigate the effect of the addition of ZnO nanostructures. The hydrophilicity of the blended membranes increased with a higher content of ZnO nanoparticles in the membrane (2–6%), which could be f… Show more

“…As can be seen in Figure , when the concentration of ZnO nanoparticles was increased from 2 to 5 wt.%, there was an increase in the intensity of ZnO peaks for both PES‐b‐PES‐ABS (M‐3 to M‐5) and PES‐b‐PES‐AMBS (M‐7 to M‐9) nanocomposites membranes. Our XRD reported result for PES is in agreement with Haider et al and Gohari and Abu‐Zahra while ZnO nanoparticles result is also in agreement with previous studies …”

“…The peak shift in ZnO nanoparticles result is also in agreement with previous studies. 23,24 The thermal stability of the chemically modified PES and its composites comparison with pure PES were investigated using thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) under nitrogen atmospheres as shown in Figure 8A and 8B. In Figure 8A Figure 11.…”

“…To investigate the structural characteristics or crystallinity of polymer or nano-composite membrane, X-RD is the best tool as it is a non-destructive technique. IR spectroscopy is basically employed in order to get information about composition of membranes or presence of different functional groups on membrane surface [213,214]. FT-IR technique is used to determine the cross linking on the surface and to study the chemical structure of the membrane.…”

“…The number of live bacteria in samples were determined by counting the number of colony forming units (CFU) and live and dead staining (Al-Hinai et al, 2017 ; Sathe et al, 2017 ). To determine CFU, serial 10-fold dilutions of collected groundwater or synthetic water samples were made with sterile distilled water.…”
