Prospective, randomized, double‐blind assessment of topical bakuchiol and retinol for facial photoageing

Abstract: Our study demonstrates that bakuchiol is comparable with retinol in its ability to improve photoageing and is better tolerated than retinol. Bakuchiol is promising as a more tolerable alternative to retinol.

“…Bakuchiol, an extract of Psoralea corylifolia seeds, has been found to have similar efficacy to retinol, stimulating collagen in mature fibroblasts and upregulating genes involved in preserving the ECM and dermo‐epidermal junction, and decreasing wrinkles and hyperpigmentation in vivo, without the irritant side effects typical of retinol …”

“…17015‐60‐0) is a purified meroterpene phenol, and is found mainly in Psoralea corylifolia (babchi seeds), as well as in some other Asian plants, for example, Psoralea glandulosa , Pimelea drupaceae (cherry riceflower), and Ulmus davidiana (Father David elm) . In in vitro and experimental models, bakuchiol has shown various biological properties, including anticancer, antioxidant, oestrogen‐like, antimicrobial, antifungal, liver‐protective, antidiabetic and immune‐suppressive activity . This compound has been found to reduce photoageing and to have antiacne activity, similarly to retinoids .…”
