Delayed Socket Healing After Dental Extraction in Patients Undergoing Myelosuppressive Chemotherapy for Hematological Malignancy: Incidence and Risk Factors

Abstract: Although dental extraction can be safely performed in patients undergoing myelosuppressive chemotherapy for hematologic malignancy, oral surgeons should understand the potential risk for delayed socket healing. When considering dental extraction, patients with hematologic malignancy and low hemoglobin or platelet levels should be informed about the possibility of delayed socket healing.

“…The 200-μL mixture was loaded into the wells of the plate. For assessing the effect of CCL2, the human recombinant CCL2 (rhCCL2) (#HY-P7237; MedChemExpress, Monmouth Junction, NJ, USA) were added into HUVECs in different concentrations (1,5,10,50, and 100 ng/mL) to find the effective concentration. Then, the indicated cells were treated with the effective concentration (100 ng/mL) of rhCCL2.…”

“…The incidence of delayed socket healing after tooth extraction is approximately 7.5%. ( 1 ) Delayed healing and dimensional loss of the alveolar ridge make subsequent treatment difficult because they further impair occlusal function and have negative aesthetic consequences. ( 2 ) Anorganic bovine bone, guided bone regeneration, platelet‐rich plasma, and autogenous bone grafts are the most common methods used to stimulate socket healing.…”

“…If the patient is already receiving systemic therapy, invasive dental procedures are appropriate during periods of remission or between chemotherapy cycles while cell and platelet counts are at their optimum. Accordingly, Akashi et al did not detect any rebleeding events when platelet counts were > 50,000/μL and topical hemostyptics were used [ 62 ].…”

“…Collagen sponges when used in burns and ulcers (decubitus ulcers) have the ability to absorb large quantities of tissue exudates, blood, and saliva and present the benefit to adhere to the wet wounds and by clouting to facilitate the dermal and epidermal wound healing. Piroxicamcollagen sponges could also be used as the delivery system for intravaginal wounds or cervical dysplasia [14][15][16][17][18].…”
