Aging male symptomatology and eating behavior

Abstract: We found a marked association between aging-male symptomatology and eating-disorder symptomatology in aging men. Our findings suggest that clinicians should carefully inquire about eating disorder symptoms in men aged 40 and above reporting aging-male symptomatology. Importantly, several men in the study reported "purging" via excessive exercise (as opposed to the more common methods of vomiting or use of laxatives or diuretics), and therefore this should be a subject of inquiry in clinical evaluations. To pur… Show more

“…Food intake is controlled through highly complex processes; modifications of this system during the ageing process result in the anorexia of ageing (Horwitz et al 2002;Landi et al 2016), as we observed in the relative food intake in the MOF 1 . Complex mechanisms are involved in the age-related deterioration of food intake such as the decline in saliva secretion, as well as the decrease of the sense of smell and taste, changes in gastrointestinal function, chronic low-grade inflammation and alterations in circulating hormones (Landi et al 2016;Kummer et al 2019).…”

“…Therefore, it is important to state that our findings are indicative of disordered eating. However, our questions were based on standardized instruments (e.g., the EDE-Q and the DSM-5 clinical criteria for eating disorders) which are commonly used in research on eating behavior [ 28 ] and in our prior studies in men [ 40 ].…”

“…We found in our community sample of Austrian men, that individuals scoring high on the Aging Males’ Symptoms (AMS) scale showed higher prevalence rates of eating disturbances than low-scoring men [ 54 ]. The AMS scale is a tool to assess symptoms of aging [ 55 ], and high scores on the AMS scale have been shown to be indicative of a possible testosterone deficiency [ 56 ].…”
