Bovine viral diarrhea virus subgenotype 1b in water buffalos (Bubalus bubalis) from Brazil

Abstract: Serological studies have characterized the presence of the bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV) infection in water buffalo herds worldwide. However, the molecular characterization of BVDV strains circulating in this animal species is uncommon. The aim of this study was to identify young water buffalo with acute infection and characterize the subgenotype of the infecting wild-type BVDV strain. Two dairy water buffalo herds from Northeastern Brazil were selected based on the results of virus neutralization test wh… Show more

“…analysis was based on comparison of both 5 ′ UTR and N pro gene sequences (Rodrigues et al, 2011). Paixão et al (2018) reported the genetic identification of BVDV isolated from the serum of water buffalo calves from two herds with high levels of BVDV antibodies in Maranhão state, northeastern Brazil. Phylogenetic analysis based on the 5 ′ UTR revealed two BVDV-1b isolates circulating in each herd.…”

“…The second, with low seroprevalences from 8.1% to 11.1% and with slight variation in titers, suggests an epidemiological condition of infection stability, but in small, closed herds, with few management practices and no introduction of new replacements [ 69 ]. Recently, active infection with BVDV subgenotype 1b was identified for the first time in Brazil’s two herds of dairy buffaloes [ 70 ]. Of interest, the virus has been detected in fetal bovine serum from Brazil, Australia, Canada, the United States, and Mexico [ 59 , 71 ].…”

“…Infection of both American Bison ( Bison bison ) and Canadian Bison ( Bison bison bison) with BVDV has been shown to occur with outcomes including pregnancy losses, enteritis, severe foot lesions [ 111 ], general un-thriftiness and persistently BVDV infected individuals [ 112 ]. Similarly, antibodies to BVDV have also been detected in water buffalo ( Bubalus bubalis ) from Australia [ 113 ], Italy [ 114 ], Zambia [ 115 ] and Brazil [ 116 ], but not in South East Asia (Laos and Cambodia) [ 117 ]. While the detection of BVDV-specific antibodies indicates that ater buffalo are susceptible to BVDV infections, the clinical outcomes relating to these infections are not well documented.…”
