Alternate healthy eating index and risk of depression: A meta-analysis and systemematic review

Abstract: Our findings suggest that the AHEI-2010 is associated with a reduction in depression risk. However, well-designed randomized controlled trials must be conducted to confirm the causal relationship between the AHEI-2010 and depression.

“…Higher LBS and DQD indicated more insufficient intake and a more imbalanced diet. The negative association between adherence to dietary guidelines and mental disorders has been reported among Western countries (56,57). “…One study has reported the inverse association of Alternative Healthy Eating Index (AHEI) with depression and suggested this inverse association has been generated by the cumulative effects of all components of AHEI rather than an individual nutrient or food group (58). The antidepression effect of nutrients is cumulative, and a balanced diet includes multiple components and complex interactions between dietary components and nutrients and their synergistic effects (56,59). Our results highlighted the importance of maintaining the proper dietary balance on the decreased risk of postpartum depression.…”

“…However, for the sake of this discussion, we are assuming that individuals with FI have worse nutritional status than those who are food secure, particularly in the context of drug use. This assumption is used to triangulate findings from the field of nutritional psychiatry which describes links between nutrition and depressive symptoms (26)(27)(28)(29)(30)(31) . Given the emerging evidence on the relationship between nutrition and mental health (i.e.…”

“…A recent systematic review and meta-analysis concluded that diet may have a direct effect on biological processes (e.g. chronic inflammation and neurotransmitter production) involved in depression (31) . Interestingly, data from the US suggest that FI is associated with obesity (32)(33)(34)(35) which may be linked to overall poor diet quality (36) .…”
