Quality of life, symptoms and care needs in patients with persistent or recurrent platinum-resistant ovarian cancer: An NRG Oncology/Gynecologic Oncology Group study

Abstract: In patients nearing the end of life, there are significant associations between disease and treatment related symptoms and unmet patient needs, which do not change substantially over time. Careful exploration of specific end-of-life care needs can improve patient-centered care and QOL.

“…This finding is notable, given that multiple studies in this patient population demonstrate stable or gradual worsening of symptom burden and QOL over time that improves only after stopping therapy. 3,40 Improvements in symptom burden and QOL in the EUC group were unexpected and may have blunted the observed benefits of the WRITE interventions.…”

“…5 Aggressive treatment can lead to multiple severe symptoms and significant QOL impairments. 3,6 A 2016 National Academies report 7 called for novel self-management interventions to optimize quality and quantity of life. However, the process of symptom self-management can be overwhelming and time-consuming for both patients and clinicians.…”

“…However, in this palliative treatment setting, quality of life is also very important. 25 26 Therefore, further studies are needed to evaluate the quality of life in addition to tolerability, satisfaction, and performance during and after treatment. Fourth, treatment differences would exist between the two tertiary centers.…”

“…Ovarian cancer-specific survival at 5 years is 40% for stage III disease and only 20% for stage IV disease [1]. Patients can experience debilitating symptoms during the last phase of life [2]. Aggressive medical care near the end-of-life, including hospital and intensive care unit (ICU) admissions, is associated with worse patient's quality of life [3].…”
