Effects of the WRITE Symptoms Interventions on Symptoms and Quality of Life Among Patients With Recurrent Ovarian Cancers: An NRG Oncology/GOG Study (GOG-0259)

Abstract: PURPOSE GOG-259 was a 3-arm randomized controlled trial of two web-based symptom management interventions for patients with recurrent ovarian cancer. Primary aims were to compare the efficacy of the nurse-guided (Nurse-WRITE) and self-directed (SD-WRITE) interventions to Enhanced Usual Care (EUC) in improving symptoms (burden and controllability) and quality of life (QOL). METHODS Patients with recurrent or persistent ovarian, fallopian, or primary peritoneal cancer with 3+ symptoms were eligible for the study… Show more

“…7 Emerging consensus on the efficacy of routine electronic symptom reporting and follow-up interventions could also strengthen symptom reduction in this population. 20,[51][52][53] The efficacy of weekly electronic PRO monitoring for adults with metastatic cancer receiving treatment (including symptoms with alerts to clinicians for severe or worsening symptoms) on improving symptoms has recently been reported. 54 A similar symptom-specific intervention that integrates GA could be evaluated for older patients with aging-related conditions.…”

“…However, symptom burden and HRQL did not improve in either intervention-arm. 83 The authors suggested the lack of improvement in symptom burden might be due to the highly variable nature of symptoms in ROC. 83 Moreover, the authors acknowledged patients with high symptom burden had difficulty engaging in self-management interventions.…”

“…83 The authors suggested the lack of improvement in symptom burden might be due to the highly variable nature of symptoms in ROC. 83 Moreover, the authors acknowledged patients with high symptom burden had difficulty engaging in self-management interventions. Given the high symptom burden of ROC, future research should extend these efforts and examine the use of novel PRO-based interventions to facilitate enhanced symptom management and potentially improve the HRQL of women with ROC.…”
