Seroprevalence and risk factors of hepatitis E virus infection in cancer patients in eastern China

Abstract: This investigation revealed that the seroprevalence of HEV was significantly higher in cancer patients than in controls in eastern China. Therefore, cancer patients are a high-risk population and should be kept away from sources of HEV infection.

“…These authors hypothesized that past HEV infection may increase the severity of HBV or HCV infection and accelerate progression to HCC in such a setting. In China, Bai et al found a three-fold greater HEV seroprevalence among 103 patients with liver cancer than in 950 control volunteers (31% vs. 13%) (Bai et al, 2018). In that study, HBV and HCV co-infections were not documented in the HCC patients, and HEV seroprevalence was also significantly increased in association with other cancers.…”

“…The diseased patients are normally immuno-suppressed or immunocompromised, and received blood transfusions, immunosuppressive medications or cancer chemotherapy which prompts their higher vulnerability to HEV. In rural cancer patients the seroprevalence of HEV was 27.8% marginally higher and pigs act as main reservoir of HEV in these areas as compared to urban cancer patients (24.2%) 91 . Prevalence of HEV was also examined in the Nepalese HIV Fig.…”

“…Recent data produced both in Eastern Asia or sub-Saharan Africa, however, indicate that HEV infection might represent a risk factor of chronic liver disease progression leading ultimately to hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) (Amanya et al, 2017[2]; Amougou Atsama et al, 2017[3]; Bai et al, 2018[6]; Diwe et al, 2013[9]).…”
