A Rare Case of Colonic Metastases From Tonsillar Carcinoma: Case Report and Review of Literature

Abstract: The incidence of tonsillar cancer has increased by four times in the United States over the last few decades likely due to recent increase in human papilloma virus (HPV) infections. The stage of the tumor predicts likelihood of metastasis, with advanced stages associated with higher chances of metastasis. The squamous cell carcinomas (SCCs) of the head and neck commonly metastasize to the lung, bone and liver in descending order. Tonsillar cancer rarely involves the small bowel and our review of the literature… Show more

“…However, proliferating tumor cells metastasize to distant sites and invade other tissues, often causing morbidity[ 1 , 2 ]. In recent years, colorectal carcinogenesis (CRC) has imposed a major health burden in developing countries[ 3 , 4 ]. CRC is the second highest cause of cancer deaths in women, and the third highest cause of cancer deaths in men[ 5 ].…”

“…Oral metastatic lesions from distant tumors are uncommon, accounting for only 1% of all oral malignancies [38][39][40] . Th e primary tumors are mainly lung, breast, kidney and colon tumors, which represent about 70% of the cases, reported in the literature [38][39][40] . Neoplasms of the gastrointestinal tract occasionally metastasize to the…”

“…1,2 In recent years, colorectal carcinogenesis (CRC) has significantly increased as a health burden in developing nations. 3,4 CRC is the third greatest cause of cancer-related death in men and women, and it is the second most common cause in women. 5 Natural circumstances, a sedentary lifestyle, and an unhealthy diet have all contributed to an increase in CRC incidence in recent years.…”
