Anthelmintic resistance in human and animal pathogenic helminths has been spreading in prevalence and severity. Multidrug resistance is a widespread problem in livestock animals. The use of available pharmacology-based information is critical to the design of successful future approaches for parasite control. Relevant scientific work supporting the main strategies to optimize anthelmintic therapy in ruminants under the current drug-resistance scenario is described here. We emphasize the need for further integrated pharmaco-parasitological knowledge to extend the lifespan of both traditional and novel anthelmintic compounds, and to progress in the identification of complementary/alternative measures of parasite control in livestock animals.

The poultry red mite (PRM), Dermanyssus gallinae, is one of the most detrimental ectoparasite on poultry farms worldwide. The blood fed on birds provides the mites with nutrition and energy for their activities, development and reproduction. In the evaluation of the efficacy of novel drugs or vaccines against PRMs, their effects on blood digestion are generally used as a key parameter. The blood digestion of haematophagous arthropods (including D. gallinae) is usually assessed by weighing; however, this method shows some limitations. The main objective of the present study was to develop a scoring method that can quickly and visually evaluate the blood digestion status of PRMs. A 0–4 point scoring criterion was established to describe the blood digestion status of D. gallinae based on the changes in appearance in the intestinal tract of PRMs during the blood digestion process. There was a good consistency between the results obtained by the blood digestion scoring and the weighing, indicating the reliability of this new method. The results obtained from volunteers were consistent with the results from researchers with low coefficient of variation, indicating that the scoring method has good practicability. The applicability of the scoring method was confirmed in an efficacy study, where it was found that doramectin could significantly inhibit the blood digestion of PRMs, lowering the blood digestion score.

Cacing nematoda gastrointestinal merupakan parasit yang memiliki peran penting pada ruminansia di negara tropis maupun subtropis. Nematoda tersebut memicu berbagai masalah kesehatan dan dapat mengakibatkan penurunan produksi karena menghambat pertumbuan, rendahnya kenaikan bobot badan, kematian pada hewan muda, biaya pengobatan tinggi dan kerugian ekonomi yang besar dalam usaha peternakan. Penggunaan golongan macrocyclic lactones yang memiliki spektrum luas telah digunakan dalam mengendalikan infeksi cacing nematoda gastrointestinal dalam industri peternakan selama empat dekade yang pada akhirnya menyebabkan resistensi antelmintik. Seiring berkembangnya resistensi terhadap anthelmintik membuat para ahli berusaha mencari metode standar untuk digunakan sebagai deteksi resistensi yang dapat diandalkan. Meskipun demikian, sebagian besar metode yang digunakan memiliki kekurangan seperti biaya tinggi, aplikasi dan interpretasi yang tidak mudah. Saat ini pedoman standar untuk deteksi resistensi anthelmintik telah dikeluarkan oleh World Association for Advancement of Veterinary Parasitology (WAAVP). resistensi antelmintik dapat diatasi atau ditunda dengan berbagai upaya seperti manajemen pencegahan dan pengobatan cacing pada ternak secara terpadu.
