Impulsivity and Comorbid PTSD and Binge Drinking

Abstract: Young adults who report difficulty attending to immediate stimuli within their environment may be unable to think about and/or process the traumatic event, potentially increasing risk for PTSD and maladaptive coping skills to manage this distress (e.g., alcohol misuse, binge drinking).

“…Rationale for establishing a drinking minimum frequency was to exclude infrequent drinkers and reduce the variability in the data due to frequency of drinking. This definition is consistent with that in existing literature (Walker et al, 2018). Individuals meeting basic eligibility criteria as determined by the preliminary phone or web-based screen came in for an office screening visit assessment to determine trauma group status and guarantee eligibility for the parent study laboratory visit.…”

“…Behavioral endophenotypes are more closely related to the abnormalities that characterize these disorders and have the potential to integrate many different underlying genetic and environmental factors, in effect providing a valuable summary of data that might otherwise be prohibitively difficult or impossible to get (Gottesman and Gould, 2003). One such endophenotype that has been consistently associated with both PTSD and SUD is impulsivity (Weiss et al, 2013;James et al, 2014;Walker et al, 2018;Grubbs and Chapman, 2019). Impulsivity is a multifaceted concept in research but can be broadly defined as a tendency to engage in risky, premature, or situationally inappropriate actions that are characterized by a lack of planning or forethought (Robbins et al, 2012;Jentsch et al, 2014;Dalley and Robbins, 2017).…”

“…Participants were recruited to one of three study groups: non-trauma exposed control (controls), trauma exposed without PTSD (TE), or trauma exposed with PTSD. See prior work for information for eligibility details ( 38 ). Of those, 72 controls, 72 TE, and 53 PTSD participants ( n = 197) provided blood samples for genomic analyses.…”
