Spatially-explicit model for assessing wild dog control strategies in Western Australia

Abstract: Large predators can significantly impact livestock industries. In Australia, wild dogs (, and hybrids) cause economic losses of more than AUD$40M annually. Landscape-scale exclusion fencing coupled with lethal techniques is a widely practiced control method. In Western Australia, the State Barrier Fence encompasses approximately 260,000km of predominantly agricultural land, but its effectiveness in preventing wild dogs from entering the agricultural region is difficult to evaluate. We conducted a management st… Show more

“…Individual-based models capture important variation in processes at scales relevant to management and are increasingly used to improve efficiency in on-ground conservation planning (Pacioni, Kennedy, Berry, Stephens, & Schumaker, 2018;Stillman, Railsback, Giske, Berger, & Grimm, 2015). FoxNet's realistic predictions make it immediately applicable to the spatial design and optimisation of predator control programmes.…”

“…Heinrichs et al (2017) used a HexSim model for sage grouse (Centrocercusurophasianus) in Wyoming, USA to explore the efficacy of possible conservation strategies. Pacioni et al (2018) used HexSim to examine the efficacy of landscape-scale exclusion fencing coupled with lethal culling techniques to control wild dogs in Western Australia.…”

“…The few remaining pastoral enterprises running sheep on the "outside" are generally within 100 km of fence, and properties "inside" the fence running small livestock (i.e. sheep) have seen incursions by dingoes through the fence for over 10 years (Pacioni et al 2018). As such, dingoes are present, but subject to relatively high control effort, on both sides of the WA State Barrier Fence.…”
