Usefulness of the maximum standardized uptake value for the diagnosis and staging of patients with cervical cancer undergoing positron emission tomography/computed tomography

Abstract: Cervical cancer recently has become more common among younger women in Japan. Diagnosing early-stage cancer is straightforward using cervical cytodiagnosis and histological diagnosis. However, postmenopausal endophytic cervical cancer and skip lesions in cervical adenocarcinoma are difficult to detect. We compared the maximum standardized uptake value (SUVmax) of 18F-fluorodeoxy-glucose positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) for primary staging of cervical cancer and evaluated the relationsh… Show more

“…To measure the metabolic activity in the whole tumour and its entirety, volume based parameters, such as MTV and TLG have become more of an object of interest lately [14]. Takagi et al based on the analysis of 38 cervical cancer patients noted that SUV max value of primary tumor is useful in differentiating between stage ≤I and ≥II [15]. Our analysis showed that neither SUV max nor SUV mean had any significance in all assessed endpoints.…”

“…MTV, metabolic tumor volume; peak SUV, peak standardized uptake value; SUVmax, maximum standardized uptake value; TLG, total lesion glycolysis. associated with poor clinical outcomes in patients undergoing radical hysterectomy [21,22]. Conversely, MTV and TLG are the quantitative indexes among the fluorodeoxyglucose-PET/CT parameters that measure the metabolically active tumor volume and activity, respectively [23,24].…”

“…reported that SUVmax was significantly different between stage ≤I and ≥II cervical cancer, and Yagi et al . reported that high SUVmax was associated with poor clinical outcomes in patients undergoing radical hysterectomy [ 21 , 22 ]. Conversely, MTV and TLG are the quantitative indexes among the fluorodeoxyglucose-PET/CT parameters that measure the metabolically active tumor volume and activity, respectively [ 23 , 24 ].…”
