Herpes simplex virus type 2 IgG antibodies in sera of umbilical cord as a proxy for placental infection in asymptomatic pregnant women

Abstract: We describe for the first time that newborns from mothers with HSV-2 placental infection have higher IgG titers in sera of umbilical cord, suggesting IgGs antibodies can be indicative of placental viral infection in asymptomatic women.

“…In the USA, the HSV-1 seroprevalence declined by nearly 7% ( p < 0.01) while the highest decline >29% ( p < 0.01) was found among 14–19-year-olds from 1999–2004 to 2005–2010 [ 10 ]. HSV seroepidemiology is mostly affected by geographic location, age, socioeconomic status, personal hygiene, and behavioral factors such as age at sexual debut and number of sexual partners and is highly dependent on which kind of cohort is being studied [ 6 , 8 , 9 , 10 , 14 ].…”

“…Human immunoglobulin G (IgG) has been identified as the human body antibody with the highest abundance [1] , [2] , [3] . Besides, IgG is the only human immunoglobulin that can pass through the placenta, which exerts a vital part in the anti-infective immunity in newborns [4] , [5] , [6] . IgG is highly expressed in serum and accounts for 75–80% of all immunoglobulins in serum.…”
