Is pulmonary metastasectomy beneficial in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma? A review of literature

Abstract: Metastatic head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) has traditionally carried a dismal prognosis; however with advances in care, it has been shown that pulmonary metastasectomy is a viable therapeutic option in selected patients, palliating symptoms and improving survival. With the increasing incidence of human papilloma virus-related HNSCC and better availability of minimal access surgery, there is a need to better understand the role of pulmonary metastasectomy in the treatment of HNSCC. This article su… Show more

“…A daganatos betegek kivizsgálása, szoros kontrollja, utánkövetése során a mellkas-CT-felvételen már kismé-retű áttétek is felismerésre kerülnek. Szoliter tumorok -mint colorectalis [4], emlő- [5], vese- [6], fej-nyaki [7] daganatok és sarcomák [8], tüdő áttétei -esetén is hatékony kezelési forma azok műtéti eltávolítása, ami növeli a betegek túlélését. Szintén elsődlegesen VATS-technikával történő eltávolításuk javasolt, általában atípusos, nem anatómiai reszekcióval [9].…”

“…Squamous cell carcinoma is the most common histological type of head and neck cancer, and the utility of PM for these cancers has been reviewed elsewhere (102,103). Adenoid cystic carcinomas have been associated with a better prognosis than head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (104).…”

“… 7 In contrast, more than half of cases treated with surgical excision of osteosarcoma alone without chemotherapy die within 12 months of diagnosis, and most pulmonary metastases occur at a median time of 10 months, providing a relatively rapid endpoint for surgery. 8 , 9 , 10 , 11 In addition, pulmonary and lymphatic metastases in patients with osteosarcoma have been the focus of attention in recent years. 12 , 13 Low‐grade osteosarcoma can be treated by simple surgical resection.…”
