A combination of selected mapping and clipping to increase energy efficiency of OFDM systems

Abstract: We propose an energy efficient combination design for OFDM systems based on selected mapping (SLM) and clipping peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) reduction techniques, and show the related energy efficiency (EE) performance analysis. The combination of two different PAPR reduction techniques can provide a significant benefit in increasing EE, because it can take advantages of both techniques. For the combination, we choose the clipping and SLM techniques, since the former technique is quite simple and effecti… Show more

“…Moreover, asymptotically at high IBO, for limited maximum amplitude r max , the HPA output is equal to its input, i.e. H HPA (r) = r. Hence, from the generic EVM expression of Lemma 1, by using (20) and (22), T 1 and P out can be expressed for high IBO as:…”

“…This last result was also independently derived in [21]. Aiming at studying a combined scheme of clipping and SLM technique, the authors of [22] evaluated the simulated probability density function (PDF) of the time domain signal after applying clipping, SLM and the combined techniques respectively, in order to visualize the distortions caused by PAPR reduction methods. Also, they proposed an empirical model of the average distortion power expression due to clipping while using the combined techniques based on the distortion power calculated in [17].…”

“…This high PAPR severely affect energy efficiency for batteries deployed transceivers in UWA communication. It has been noted in Reference 9, that the rising energy cost of network operations contributes to 50% of total operational expenditure. However, this energy cost can be reduced by improving the energy efficiency of HPA.…”

“…Many researchers introduced such techniques and classified PAPR into several classes. In terrestrial communication, clipping is the easiest way to mitigate PAPR [20][21][22][23]. Moreover, reconstruction of the lost clipped signal, iterative clipping, and filtering have been introduced [24][25][26].…”
