“…In the study, 65 neurogenic tumors were located near the spine, accounting for 90.3% (65/72) of the tumors in the region. This is consistent with previous research . Fujimoto et al analyzed a total of 167 patients with primary retroperitoneal tumors during a 12‐year study and found that liposarcoma and schwannomas are the most common histological types of malignant and benign tumors…”

“…Considering malignancy cannot be excluded preoperatively and even intraoperative frozen section cannot provide accurate pathology diagnosis, it is recommended that the management of retroperitoneal schwannomas is complete surgical excision with negative soft tissue margins. [ 21 ] However, controversies still exist about whether excision of adjacent tissue and viscera is necessary or not. Some authors suggested that simple enucleation or partial excision without removal of adjacent organs was sufficient because of the benign nature for most cases and loss of adjacent organs may influence the prognosis.…”

“…2 As mentioned by Fujimoto et al, one of the characteristics of this article is that not only STS, but also benign tumors, were analyzed and discussed. 3 There are just a few reports regarding Asian patients with primary retroperitoneal tumors. The present study showed that approximately 40% of all patients had benign tumors, and the most common benign retroperitoneal tumor was schwannoma.…”

“…2 The present study by Fujimoto et al is valuable in that it describes intimate data on the demographics, treatments and prognoses of retroperitoneal tumors, using a multi-institutional cohort of 167 Japanese patients. 3 The study included both intermediate/ malignant and benign tumors, which might compromise the purity of the study cohort, but could reflect the real-world situation instead.…”
