“…However, those reports did not recover adult worms in experimentally infected animals and might have misidentified the obtained L3 larvae from the closely related species A. cantonensis or A. minascensis , since 11 out of 18 known A. costaricensis -intermediate hosts have been reported also as competent hosts for A. cantonensis. Moreover, Biomphalaria glabrata [ 64 ], Biomphalaria straminea [ 65 ], Biomphalaria tenagophila [ 65 ] and Sarasinula linguaeformis [ 66 ] have been found naturally infected with A. costaricensis and A. cantonensis.…”

“…The volume of the albumen gland is smaller in snails with a greater number of parasitic cysts, which could be a sign of less galactogen storage. A decrease in galactogen of albumen glands (about 50%) and in the average number of eggs per egg mass was reported for B. glabrata (Tunholi-Alves et al, 2011) and Biomphalaria straminea (Lima et al, 2017) experimentally infected with A. cantonensis . As the ovotestis of these infected snails maintained a normal functional appearance until 21 days of infection, the authors proposed that the effect of parasitism appears to be on oviposition and not on gametogenesis of B. glabrata and B. straminea .…”

“…As the ovotestis of these infected snails maintained a normal functional appearance until 21 days of infection, the authors proposed that the effect of parasitism appears to be on oviposition and not on gametogenesis of B. glabrata and B. straminea . The decrease of the galactogen synthesis, caused directly or indirectly by the development of A. cantonensis larvae, would reduce the storage of this polysaccharide in the albumen gland and its transfer to the eggs, compromising oviposition (Tunholi-Alves et al, 2011; Lima et al, 2017). No cysts were found in the ovotestis of M. abbreviatus .…”
