In vitro antifungal activity of Myracrodruon urundeuva Allemão against human vaginal Candida species

Abstract: Myracrodruon urundeuva is a plant native to Brazil, which is used by the indigenous population for the treatment of candidiasis. The aims of this study were to evaluate the antifungal activity of extract against human vaginal Candida species and evaluate the possible toxicological activities of M. urundeuva. Initially, ethanol extracts, ethyl acetate fractions, and hydroalcoholic fractions of the bark and leaf of M. urundeuva were used to determine the minimum inhibitory concentration. The extracts that showed… Show more

“…Furthermore, the antifungal activity was retained when the extract was incorporated into a nanostructured lipid system (Bonifácio et al, 2015). Other groups have also reported on the antifungal activity of A. urundeuva bark and leaves against different species of Candida (Oliveira et al, 2017). Thus, in an initial set of experiments we used CLSI techniques to assess the antifungal activity of both the free extract and the extract incorporated in an improved microemulsion formulation against two other collection strains of C. albicans , and also expanded these studies to a C. glabrata collection strain (Table 1).…”

“…Many reports on the pharmacological properties of extracts and isolated compounds from M. urundeuva are found in the literature, corroborating its uses as antiulcer and gastroprotective (Carlini et al ), anti‐inflammatory and analgesic (Souza et al ), and antimicrobial against bacteria, fungi, and viruses (Sá et al ; Figueredo et al ; Cecilio et al ; Oliveira et al ). However, despite its large use in traditional herbal medicine, only a few reports on its toxicological effect can be found in the literature.…”
