Comparative Analysis of Retinal Reattachment Surgery With or Without Internal Limiting Membrane Peeling to Prevent Postoperative Macular Pucker

Abstract: Internal limiting membrane peeling during pars plana vitrectomy for rhegmatogenous retinal detachment significantly reduces ERM formation in the postoperative period and is associated with better visual and anatomical outcomes.

“…Similarly, Garweg et al [ 8 ], Foveau et al [ 10 ], Blanco-Teijeiro et al [ 11 ] and Aras et al [ 9 ] included only macula off RD. The rate of macula off RD recorded by Rao et al [ 7 ], Nam et al [ 3 ], Akiyama et al [ 5 ] and Forlini et al [ 4 ] was 74%, 44%, 42% and 68%, respectively. Eissa et al [ 6 ], Garweg et al [ 8 ] and Aras et al [ 9 ] used silicone oil as endotamponade in all cases, while Foveau et al [ 10 ], Blanco-Teijeiro et al [ 11 ], Rao et al [ 7 ] and Nam et al [ 3 ] performed vitrectomy with gas in each case.…”

“…A successful surgery results in recovery of the finger function. Success in replantation is assessed by the ability to rebuild the vascular circulatory system [1][2][3]. The success rate is still low, in spite of the improvements in microsurgical techniques and the development of several new technologies [4].…”

“…On the contrary, MH and MH-retinal detachment (MHRD) necessitate the ILM peeling in order to release the tractional forces and may have greater benefit from surgical variants, such as the inverted ILM flap technique [ 35 , 42 ]. In the case of rhegmatogenous retinal detachment, ILM peeling seems to reduce the incidence of epiretinal membrane occurrence [ 43 ]; however, more studies are warranted to provide the indication to peel in this specific setting.…”
