Estimates of genetic parameters and genotypic values prediction in maize landrace populations by REML/BLUP procedure

Abstract: The REML/BLUP statistics are analyses that can be used as selective criteria in the routine of maize breeding programs. The present study aims to determine the genetic potential in crosses of landrace populations applying the REML/BLUP methodology, and to identify populations for the synthesis of new populations and intrapopulation selection for family farming systems, as well as genetic constitutions for use in maize breeding programs. Nine top cross hybrids obtained in the 2012/2013 harvest were evaluated al… Show more

“…Currently, breeding programs seek to identify high yielding genotypes, and posteriorly target their selection strategies in the quality of the grains, thus, the search for the ideal genotype that gathers productive and qualitative superiority demands elevated financial and labor resources of the breeding program, as well as suitable selecting strategies [3] [4] [5] [6]. An alternative to minimize this obstacle is the multivariate selection, which aims to select a set of simultaneous traits.…”

“…The stem diameter is an important morphologic trait associated with grain yield, as it acts as sustentation and structure of energetic storage. Therefore, plants with larger stem diameter tend to present bigger energetic reserves, which are accumulated during the vegetative period and translocated to the spike during grains formation and filling (Fancelli and Dourado Neto, 2000;Baretta et al, 2017). Studies of Cruz et al (2008), also revealed strong and positive associations between stem diameter and grain yield.…”

“…Only the open pollinated genotypes were found in Pelotas through the PL2 genotype, yielding 6705 kg.ha -1 .The great variation expressed for this character is due to the phenotypic plasticity that the genotypes present C. Troyjack et al 6 due to their broad or narrow genetic base (Emygdeo et al, 2013;Baretta et al, 2017;. The analysis of the linear correlations between the agronomic characteristics measured was established to establish trends among these characters, with significance based on a probability of 5% by the t test.…”

“…One of the important components in the definition of maize yield is the genetic base used, distinct technological levels, being a necessary tool for decision making in the management and breeding. The combination of these factors will allow the maximum obtainment of the resources of the environment, seeking to optimize the productivity of the species of agricultural importance in a sustainable way (Argenta et al, 2003;Nardino et al, 2016;Baretta et al, 2017).…”
