Background:There are a lot of techniques to obturate the root canals, but lateral condensation of gutta-percha is the most used one. An important aspect of thermafil is the error margin tolerated by the manufacturer in the production of plastic carriers. In literature, there is no evidence about discrepancy percentage between different carriers. It is demonstrated that the error margin of gutta-percha is 0.5% and is 0.2% for metal files (ISO standards).Objective:The aim of this study was to evaluate the real dimensions of thermafil plastic carriers observed by the stereo microscope measuring the dimensional discrepancy between them.Methods:For this study, 80 new thermafil (Dentsply Maillefer) have been selected. 40 thermafil 0.25 and 40 thermafil 0.30. Through 60X stereo microscope, the dimensions of the plastic carrier tips have been measured. The dimensions of the plastic carrier were also measured after a heating cycle. ZL GAL 11TUSM (Zetaline stereo evolution) microscope was used to observe the samples. Measurements were made through a dedicated software (Image Focus). All samples were analysed at 60X.Results:A non-parametric paired test (Wilcoxon test) was used to compare baseline and after heating values; p-values ≤ 0.05 were assumed to be statistically significant.Conclusion:The samples we measured showed a mean value of the diameters in Thermafil 25 that was 0.27 mm, for Thermafil 30 the mean value was 0.33 mm.We have measured a dimensional variable of 8% in the 25 group while in group 30 the maximum possible variation found was 4%, that’s why we propose a new protocol of obturation with thermafil. We can also conclude that a single heating process does not affect clinically the plastic carrier dimensions.

La microtomografía es un estudio que utiliza la radiación X para obtener imágenes de tamaños de milésimas de milímetros y de alta resolución. Las imágenes 2D son procesadas por diferentes softwares para lograr obtener volúmenes capaces de ser analizados tridimensionalmente. La microtomografía es el estudio de elección a la hora de evaluar características muy pequeñas con gran precisión. La obturación endodóntica buscar lograr un sellado que no tenga espacios vacíos dentro de la masa de obturación. Esto es importante debido a que los poros pueden permitir, si están en contacto con la pared dentinaria, la entrada de microorganismos al conducto radicular. El objetivo de este trabajo fue describir el procedimiento para el análisis y visualización de los espacios vacíos dentro de la obturación endodóntica, utilizando la microtomografía de rayos x, y establecer un protocolo para ser utilizado por cualquier investigador.

A critical analysis of research methods and experimental models to study root canal fillings

Canal filling materials and techniques have been one of the most studied topics in Endodontics. A simple search using the mesh term “root canal filling” in PubMed revealed more than 11 000 articles, an impressive number that is much higher than “root canal disinfection” (5544 articles) or even the popular “root canal preparation” (8527 articles). The overriding importance attributed to root filling procedures is not merely intuitive. It derived from the appealing relevance given by the appearance of the white lines in common radiographs grounded on retrospective clinical data that had identified the quality of a root filling as one of the major causes of treatment failure (lack of healing). Since the publication of the Washington study, impressive efforts have been made for the release of new materials and techniques, as well as, for the development of a plethora of laboratory methods to assess the quality of root filling procedures. This narrative review aims to address and discuss the most relevant laboratory methods to assess the root canal filling. As filling quality improvements have not translated into higher success rates, as reported in longitudinal clinical studies, more than to deliver a simple methodology‐based review, this paper aims to present an in‐depth critical view on the assessment of laboratory methods used to study the filling materials and techniques. Recent data indicate that the long‐term dimensional stability/degradation over time of endodontic sealers plays a central role in the treatment outcome. In this context, laboratory methods should be developed focusing on predicting, at least to some degree, the long‐term clinical behaviour of root canal fillings, rather than simply ranking different materials or techniques.

Abstract: The four groups were comparable in canal volume. The overall POV was 78.11%, 85.72%, 82.50%, and 87.89% for lateral compaction, Thermafil, Obtura II, and Calamus, respectively (P Conclusion: The greatest POV was obtained with Calamus and Thermafil. Voids were seen in all root fillings.
