Comparison of semi-automated and manual methods to measure the volume of prostate cancer on magnetic resonance imaging

Abstract: Prostate cancer histologic volume can be assessed using MREV or MROV with a good accuracy and low inter-observer variability. MTD has the lowest inter-observer variability and provides best degrees of correlation with MHD. MTD should be used on MRI for selecting and following patients for active surveillance and staging before focal treatment of prostate cancer.

“…(Ukimura et al, 2013) Multiparametric MRI is increasingly used in prostate cancer assessment for its diagnosis and detection and for staging and risk stratification (Thompson, Lawrentschuk, Frydenberg, Thompson, & Stricker, 2013;Felker, Margolis, Nassiri, & Marks, 2016). A concern regarding mpMRI is the considerable interobserver variability (Fedorov, Vangel, Tempany, & Fennessy, 2017;Marin et al, 2017). Mp-MRI has been used to assess prostate cancer aggressiveness and to identify anteriorly located tumors before and during active surveillance.…”

“…More specifically, the apparent diffusion coefficient, which is calculated from DWI sequences, inversely correlates with PCa aggressiveness ( 18 ). Furthermore, automated calculations of lesion volume on mpMRI reliably correspond with PCa presence ( 18 , 20 ). Marin et al demonstrated that the use of semi-automated sizing algorithms to measure maximal tumor dimensions of suspicious lesions reliably correlated with actual tumor histologic diameter, and this practice should be considered during routine workup ( 20 ).…”

“…Results are shown in Tables 1–5. Table 1 lists the 18 studies and shows the accuracy calculation 19,23–39 . This determined the order of the studies as presented in the remaining Tables 2–5.…”
