Occupational Engagement in Low-Income Latina Breast Cancer Survivors

Abstract: Breast cancer can have a negative impact on occupational engagement in low-income Latina breast cancer survivors; however, some occupations may increase QOL. Socioeconomic status and cultural values influence occupational engagement and QOL. Occupational therapy practitioners can improve health outcomes in this population through awareness of relevant sociocultural factors and attention to appropriate patient communication.

“…The results were consistent with the report indicating that these symptoms after treatment affected their ability to conduct a work [22]. It is necessary to formulate individual rehabilitation plans during or after treatment to restore their physical functions or mental wellbeing for work and social activities [25].…”

“…At the same time, significant challenges remained. Consistent with reports from research with Latina and non-Latina populations, 6,24,30 continued swelling and other symptoms rendered participants less able to engage in activities independently than prior to the diagnosis. Their occupational lives were disrupted as well, consistent with previous reports in the literature about Latina and non-Latina White breast cancer survivors.…”
