Long-term low dose dietary resveratrol supplement reduces cardiovascular structural and functional deterioration in chronic heart failure in rats

Abstract: A short term exposure to resveratrol at high dosages exerts a remarkable cardioprotective effect. Whether a long-term exposure to resveratrol at low dosages that can be obtained through consumption of a resveratrol-rich diet is beneficial to heart diseases is unknown. We tested the effects of a resveratrol-enriched diet on cardiovascular remodeling of chronic heart failure (CHF) in rats resulting from permanent ligation of left coronary artery. Two weeks after surgery, rats were start to feed with either a res… Show more

“…Thus, resveratrol can be useful in maintaining health at a low dose; whereas at a high dose, it has pro-apoptotic actions not only on tumour cells, but on healthy cells [40]. Indeed, long-term low dose dietary resveratrol supplement was recently shown to reduce cardiovascular deterioration in chronic heart failure in rats [41], and the maximal improvement in the cerebrovascular function in type 2 diabetes mellitus patients was achieved only with the lowest dose of resveratrol used [42]. …”

“…In addition, inflammation and thrombosis occur due to the secretion of many adipokines [ 87 ]. Many reports explain that RSV causes change in cardiac health such as inhibition of plaque development, platelet accumulation, lipid metabolism, endothelial role, inflammation and stress markers [ 88 , 89 , 90 ].…”

“…These effects are associated with increasing NO, AMPK activation, lowering oxidative stress, Ang II and ET-1 [18] , [19] , [20] , [21] . Moreover, RES also prevents cardiac hypertrophy and HF through regulating LKB1/AMPK and p70S6 kinase signaling pathways in hypertensive rats [22] , [23] . However, the molecular mechanisms by which RES regulates these signaling pathways and attenuates pressure overload-induced cardiac hypertrophic remodeling remain to be elucidated.…”
