Lipid Peroxidation and Altered Antioxidant Profiles with Pediatric HIV Infection and Antiretroviral Therapy in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia

Abstract: HIV- and highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART)-associated elevations in oxidative stress likely play a role in incomplete immune reconstitution, opportunistic infections and non-AIDS co-morbidities. We aimed to test the hypothesis that children living with HIV exhibit elevated markers of oxidative stress and reduced antioxidant profiles and that HAART-therapy will exacerbate these differences. HIV-positive HAART-naïve (n = 50) and HAART-treated (n = 50) and HIV-negative control (n = 50) participants, 3-… Show more

“…HAART toxicity amplifies free radical formation through auto-oxidation of unsaturated lipids in plasma. The free radical produced may react with polyunsaturated fatty acids in cell membranes leading to lipid peroxidation [16]. Lipid peroxide-mediated tissue damage has been observed in PLWHAs under HAART.…”

“…Notably, the current study underscored the influence of both HIV infection and chemical exposures on cellular pathways associated with oxidative stress and apoptosis. The majority of prior studies focused on the influence of HIV infection or occupational exposure on oxidative stress indicators in isolation [54,56]. However, it is imperative to acknowledge the study's limitations.…”

“…В настоящее время проведен ряд исследований, посвященных изучению состояния системы ПОЛ и активности антиоксидантной защиты крови при различных заболеваниях [32][33][34][35][36][37][38][39], в том числе при ВИЧ-инфекции [40][41][42][43][44][45][46]. Однако данные по изучению параметров системы ПОЛ-АОз (антиоксидантная защита) ВИЧ-инфицированных беременных немногочисленны [47,48].…”
