Presynaptic neuromuscular transmission defect in the stiff person syndrome

Abstract: BackgroundThe stiff person syndrome (SPS) is a rare disorder characterized by muscular rigidity and stiffness.Case presentationsWe describe an SPS patient presenting with longstanding fatigue and electrophysiological evidence of presynaptic neuromuscular transmission defect, who responded to administration of pyridostigmine. In contrast, no electrophysiolgical evidence of neuromuscular transmission defect was demonstrated in 2 other SPS patients without fatigue symptoms.ConclusionsOur findings suggest that glu… Show more

“…[6] Impairement of neuromuscular transmission in MFS with positive GAD-Ab can be explained by their highly concentration at the cytoplasmic side of presynaptic nerve terminals. [7] Diagnosis of MFS is clinical, but biological and electrophysiological studies may be helpful when the triad is incomplete. Albuminocytologic dissociation is a classic nding in MFS.…”
