Validity and reliability of the dietary sodium restriction questionnaire in patients with hypertension

Abstract: The study aimed to evaluate the reliability and the validity of the dietary sodium restriction questionnaire (DSRQ) in patients with hypertension receiving outpatient treatment at a tertiary care university hospital in Southern Brazil. This instrument is composed of three subscales: attitude, subjective norm and perceived behavioral control. A total of 104 patients were included. They were 63.3±8.9 years old and 75% were females. Cronbach's alpha coefficient for the subscales of attitude, subjective norm and p… Show more

“…Each subscale is added up with a higher score representing more positive attitude, stronger normative belief, or greater barriers perceived by patients [8]. Originally, the DSRQ was developed among 174 patients with heart failure using factorial validity (3 factors extracted with 54.2% of variance) and internal consistency (a ¼ .62e.88) for reliability [8]; however, it was also reliable among a Brazilian sample with hypertension with Cronbach's alpha coefficient ranging from .41 to .85 [9].…”

“…It is a practical and simple tool that can help researchers and clinicians to assess patient adherence in a relatively short time and is simple and easy to use [8,12]. Even though the DSRQ was established among patients with heart failure, it is also reliable and can do doable duty as an assessment tool for hypertensive patients [9]. The personal beliefs are integrated inside the subscale of DSRQ which highlights individual perceptions of adherence related to sodium restriction.…”

“…The DSRQ was adapted to Brazilian Portuguese [28] and validated for heart failure (HF) [29] to help identifying facilitators and barriers to sodium-restriction adherence, and to be useful in clinical practice to guide the development of educational and counseling interventions to patients [19]. Considering the importance of assessing salt-restriction adherence and the lack of instruments for easy application in the care routine, the DSRQ was validated for hypertension [21] with the purpose of being an instrument to assess low-sodium diet adherence which can contribute to the planning of educational interventions in patients with hypertension.…”

“…The intervention sessions are designed according to the subscales of the DSRQ [21], and they will all be developed and performed by the nutritionist, who is the investigator responsible for the educational intervention, based on the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) [22]. …”

“…The participants will answer the following questionnaires: Dietary Sodium Restriction Questionnaire (DSRQ) [25] for the assessment of sodium-restriction adherence; Self-Care of Hypertension Inventory – Brazilian Version (SC-HI) [26, 27] to measure self-care in hypertension patients; Medication Assessment Questionnaire [MAQ] [28] to evaluate adherence to drug therapy; International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ) [29] to quantify the level of physical activity; and the Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS) [30] to measure daytime sleepiness. All questionnaires will be administered at baseline and at the end of follow-up.…”
