Lipid Accumulation Product (LAP) as an Index of Metabolic and Hormonal Disorders in Aging Men

Abstract: Lipid accumulation product (LAP) is an index used for evaluating lipid overaccumulation in adults. Our study aimed at assessing associations between LAP and metabolic syndrome (MetS) and its components, age-related testosterone deficiency syndrome (TDS), low-density cholesterol (LDL), as well as HOMA-IR (insulin resistance ratio), insulin level in non-diabetics and total testosterone (TT), estradiol E, dehydroepiandrosterone sulphate (DHEAs) and sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG) in aging men.313 men aged 50-… Show more

“…Therefore, MRI should be performed for these subjects to exclude other evidence of pituitary or hypothalamic disease. With regard to deteriorated metabolic profiles in ageing men, Rotter et al 24 indicated that the LAP was negatively associated with TT and SHBG in 313 men aged 50–75 years old, emphasising that the LAP is applicable in the evaluation of age-related testosterone deficiency. However, their study did not assess the symptoms of androgen insufficiency by standardised questionnaire.…”

“…Moreover, hypertriglyceridemia was associated with an increased risk for cardiovascular diseases [ 53 ]. Rotter et al [ 54 ] studied the relationship between LAP and metabolic syndrome and its components, the results showed that LAP was significantly positively correlated with serum total cholesterol, FPG, insulin, but negatively correlated with HDL in elderly men. Therefore, the LAP that derives from WC and TG is believed to be a better predictor of hypertension risk and suitable in clinical application.…”

“…The irradiation of living things, known to induce the formation of free radicals, shorten their lifespan and produce changes that resemble ageing [4,5]. Involvement of free radicals in ageing has increased progressively and is becoming one of the more plausible theories of the ageing process [6,7]. It is believed that the antioxidant defense is generally weakened in old age.…”
