Lipid accumulation product and late-onset hypogonadism in middle-aged and elderly men: results from a cross-sectional study in China

Abstract: ObjectivesHypogonadism in men is related to the deterioration of general health. However, the association between lipid overaccumulation and ageing-related hypogonadism remains an undetermined concept. We aimed to provide an insight into the possible links between the lipid accumulation product (LAP) and late-onset hypogonadism (LOH).SettingSun Yat-sen Memorial Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University.ParticipantsWe included a population sample of 997 subjects aged 40 years or older.Primary and secondary outcome mea… Show more

“…It is known that an increase in the concentration of insulin in obesity causes a rise in the concentration of triglycerides and low-density lipoproteins, and a decrease in the level of high density lipoproteins [10]. Our study has found a direct relationship between BMI and triglyceride and LDL levels, and an inverse relationship with HDL levels [25].…”

“…LAP are important indicators for the diagnosis of visceral obesity and are more sensitive than BMI indicators. In obese and adipose older men with non‐diabetes, LAP, a central obesity marker, is also thought to be associated with IR and diabetes, and with late‐onset hypogonadism in older Chinese men 26 . In the current study, in terms of predictive power, LAP was second only to HOMA‐IR with an AUC of 0.718 in non‐diabetic patients.…”

“…Other studies in post‐menopausal women found that LAP was a cardiovascular risk factor and was adversely linked with sex hormone‐binding globulin and HDL‐C 29 . In middle‐aged and older men, the Chinese investigation discovered an independent relationship between LAP and late‐onset hypogonadism 26 …”

“…Several studies have shown that visceral obesity in men is associated with low testosterone levels, male infertility, and erectile dysfunction [ 24 28 ]. In animal experiments, weight loss was associated with a rise in testosterone, free testosterone (FT) and sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG), whereas weight gain was associated with a fall in these levels [ 29 ].…”
