Chikungunya infection: A potential re-emerging global threat

Abstract: Infectious diseases are indeed a lifelong threat to everyone irrespective of age, sex, lifestyle and socio-economic status. The infectious diseases have persisted among the prominent causes of death globally. Recently, re-emergence of Chikungunya viral infection harmed many in Asian and African countries. Chikungunya was considered as a major threat in developing and under-developed countries; the recent epidemiological outbreak of Chikungunya in La Reunion urges the global researchers to develop effective vac… Show more

“…Suddenly viral outbreaks in India are increasing like pandemic Influenza [17], Nipah virus [18], Zika virus [19], dengue and Chikungunya virus is one of them. Chikungunya virus is a highly infectious viral disease and well notorious since its origin from Tanzania and has the potential to re-emerging the global level [20,21]. There is no vaccine and antiviral for CHIKV.…”

“…1 In sequence, occurs the entry of the CHIKV virus via clathrin-dependent endocytosis and uncoating of the viral genome. Capsid protein is 261 amino acids (30 kDa) long, expressed as a part of the structural polyprotein, which has a conserved autoprotease domain at the C-terminal end that helps to release itself from the polypeptide string after synthesis of structural proteins.…”

“…The genome size of CHIKV is 11.8 kb. The two open reading frames in CHIKV separately code for the structural and non‐structural proteins . The four non‐structural proteins (nsP1‐4) of CHIKV play an important role in the formation of replication complex, while the five structural proteins (C‐E3‐E2‐6K‐E1) encode the viral capsid and envelope protein .…”
