Green tea (Cammellia sinensis) attenuates ventricular remodeling after experimental myocardial infarction

Abstract: GT attenuated cardiac remodeling after MI, associated with improvement in systolic and diastolic dysfunction. Oxidative stress, energy metabolism, apoptosis, and extracellular matrix alterations are all potential mechanisms by which GT may take part.

“…Alterations in energy metabolism were also important mechanisms in the cardiac remodelling process induced by tobacco exposure. Under physiological conditions, free fatty acids are the main energy substrate of the heart, accounting for 60%‐90% of the energy supply . Fatty acids and glucose metabolites enter the citric acid cycle by β‐oxidation and glycolysis, respectively, to generate FADH2 and NADH, which participate in the electron transport chain.…”

“…To determine nuclear erithroid factor 2 (Nrf-2), LV samples were extracted with Nuclear Extraction Buffer[39]. The following primary antibodies were used: HO-1-1 to heme oxygenase-1; ab13248 (Abcam Inc, Cambridge); Nrf2: C-20, rabbit Immunoglobulin G (Santa Cruz Biotechnology Inc, Europe); Cleaved Caspase-3 (Asp175) (5A002E) Rabbit mAb (Cell Signalling Technology Inc., USA); Bcl2 sc 492 IgG rabbit monoclonal (Santa Cruz Biotechnology, Inc, Europe); and PGC-1α Antibody H-300: sc-13067 (Santa Cruz Biotechnology, Inc, Europe).…”

“…Defined as genetic, morphological and biochemical changes in response to the determined injury, cardiac remodeling results in progressive ventricular dysfunction and death. Several factors are associated with cardiac remodeling after MI, and among them, we can highlight the increase in oxidative stress and the inflammatory process [6][7][8].…”
