Integrating Collaborative Learning and Competition in a Hematology/Oncology Training Program

Abstract: New educational methods and structures to improve medical education are needed to face the challenge of an exponential increase and complexity of medical knowledge. Collaborative learning has been increasingly used in education, but its use in medical training programs is in its infancy, and its impact is still unknown; the role of competition in education is more controversial. We introduced these pedagogical methods to the hematology/oncology fellowship program at the University of Arkansas for Medical Scien… Show more

“…Team-based learning is conducive to the cultivation of students' independent learning, cooperation and mutual coordination. Micro-video production is conducive to the cultivation of students' hands-on ability and innovative spirit, while competition can stimulate students' interest and fight in learning and improve learning efficiency [4,5,[8][9][10][11][12] . The main evaluation is to set up the main situation for the judgment, which makes the students have to meet the needs of the knowledge and ability preparation as the judgers through independent learning before the evaluation on others and learn imperceptibly in the process of evaluation of others [13,14] .…”

“…From a medical perspective, moving away from the traditional teaching methods, we have witnessed growing popularity for the learning methods that stimulate high order thinking skills among learners and where learners are active (Chen et al, 2017;Makhoul et al, 2018;Mehta et al, 2013). From an academic interest perspective, the FC model has become a focus in the studies published on Pubmed, rising from just three in 2012 to 13 in 2013, 25 in 2014, 51 in 2015, 66 in 2016 and 85 in 2017. Regarding these numbers, it is apparent that the interest in the FC model is on the increase.…”
