Service users’ expectations of treatment and support at the Community Mental Health Centre in their recovery

Abstract: The study emphasises how important it is that service users' personal aims and expectations guide the collaborative treatment process. In addition to providing treatment aimed at improving symptoms, Community Mental Health Centres should take a more comprehensive approach than today by providing more support with family issues, social life, education, work and financial issues.

“…Die zahlreichen Aussagen der Studienteilnehmer, die eine Zufriedenheit mit den erhaltenen Leistungen ausdrücken, legen eine starke Ausrichtung des GPZ an den Bedürfnissen und Erwartungen seiner Nutzer nahe [5]. “…Recovery could also be gauged by a set of functional resources. For example, overcoming financial shortage was perceived as an important means of regaining autonomy (Biringer et al, 2016), although money was not seen as indispensable for a fulfilling life. Other key components of functional recovery were identified that corresponded with findings from other studies (Andresen, Oades, & Caputi, 2003;Leamy et al, 2011;Resnick et al, 2005;Schrank & Slade, 2007); for instance, engaging in meaningful daily pursuits supported recovery by fostering hope.…”

“…The scientific research community has adopted this perspective in studies conducted about and by (former) service users concerning their lived experiences in mental health care (e.g. Ashcraft & Anthony, 2007;Brown & Kandirikirira, 2007;Biringer, Davidson, Sundfør, Ruud, & Borg, 2016).…”

“…As shown in several studies exploring service users and carers' needs in crisis, people's needs are diverse and multifaceted and commonly connected to their daily lives (Burns-Lynch et al, 2014;Gullslett, 2016). Desired help is often described as connected to family issues, social life, education, employment, and financial issues (Biringer, Davidson, Sundfør, Ruud, & Borg, 2016). However, service users often continue to be offered help that regards mental distress as more or less solely caused by inner matters Klevan: Helpful help (Sanders, 2006).…”
