Evaluation of globins expression in brain, heart, and lung in rats exposed to side stream cigarette smoke

Abstract: The side stream cigarette smoke (SSCS) is a contributing factor in the pathogenesis of cigarette smoking-induced toxicity. Hemoglobin (Hb), myoglobin (Mb), neuroglobin (Ngb), and cytoglobin (Cygb) are globins with different distributions and functions in the tissues and have similar actions by providing O (oxygen) for respiratory chain, detoxification of ROS and nitric oxide (NO), and protect tissues against irreversible lesions. We aimed to investigate the effects of SSCS exposure on gene and protein expressi… Show more

“…Cygb has been implicated in oxygen transport, nitric oxide scavenging, tumor suppression and protection against oxidative stress and inflammation (Ou et al, 2018;Yassin et al, 2018). Consistent with its described functions, the expression of Cygb is upregulated in conditions associated with hypoxia, oxidative stress and inflammation (Guo et al, 2007;Tae et al, 2017;Yassin et al, 2018).…”

“…Passive smoking was significantly associated with wheezing, exercise wheezing, and asthma ever in the present study. The side stream of tobacco smoke, which comprises the main portion of passive smoking, is harmful to upper airway function and aggravates asthma by several mechanisms such as modulating antioxidant functions 19 . Passive smoking causes poor responses to steroids in asthma patients by increasing the leukotriene level and oxidative stress-related mechanisms, such as histone deacetylase-2 function via activation of the phosphoinositide-3-kinase/Akt pathway 20 , 21 .…”

“…The plausible pathophysiologic mechanisms of the effect of passive smoking on asthma might be comparable to those of active smoking. Although both active and passive smoking exposures are composed of comparable chemicals, side strem of cigarrete smoking is largely responsible for more hazardous side-effects of tobacco smoking 18 . The effects of passive smoking on asthma have been suggested to be additive to those of active smoking 10 .…”
