Improved interoceptive awareness in chronic low back pain: a comparison of Back school versus Feldenkrais method

Abstract: The Feldenkrais method has comparable efficacy as Back School in CLBP. Implications for rehabilitation The Feldenkrais method is a mind-body therapy that is based on awareness through movement lessons, which are verbally guided explorations of movement that are conducted by a physiotherapist who is experienced and trained in this method. It aims to increase self-awareness, expand a person's repertoire of movements, and to promote increased functioning in contexts in which the entire body cooperates in the exec… Show more

“…It confirmed positive correlations of subjective and physical characteristics in assessing seating comfort ( Park et al, 1998 ). Regarding the improvement of interoception our data are in alignment with the results of a study by Paolucci et al (2017) that documents improved interoceptive awareness after a Feldenkrais intervention in chronic lower back pain patients.…”

“…More recent studies complement this evidence by demonstrating significant results in physical functioning for individuals with intellectual disability compared to wait-list ( Torres-Unda et al, 2017 ) and by demonstrating significant improvement in quality of life and depression in a sample of Parkinson patients compared to a control group receiving only educational lessons ( Araújo et al, 2015 ). Another RCT could not find significant differences for patients with chronic low back pain when comparing Feldenkrais to Back School ( Paolucci et al, 2017 ). Within the Feldenkrais-method two options for application are described.…”

“…Both groups performed two weekly sessions for 5 weeks. Both groups experienced significant changes in pain ( P <0.001) during follow-up, demonstrating that Feldenkrais method has efficacy comparable to that of BS in improving CLDP 39…”

“… 59 A second RCT showed the FM has comparable efficacy to back school for the treatment of chronic low back pain. 61 Another RCT found improvements in balance testing in middle-aged individuals with intellectual disability. Given the commonality of functional decline in this population, Feldenkrais may play a role in improving physical activity and maintaining a level of independence in patients with intellectual disability.…”
