Background: Preterm childbirth increases the risk of developmental problems. The aim of the present study was to examine the effects of temperament and attention on the cognition of school-age children who were born preterm, controlling for socioeconomic variables. Material and Methods: The sample was composed of 50 six-year-old children who were born preterm with very low birth weight. The children were evaluated using the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children (WISC-III) and the Cancellation Attention Test. The mothers were interviewed using the Children’s Behavior Questionnaire (CBQ). Statistical multiple linear regression analyses were performed. Results: 70% of the children presented average or above-average full intellectual quotient (IQ). In the attention total score, 74% of the children were also within the average range or above. High verbal IQ associated with high maternal schooling explained 73% variability of the full IQ. High attention and maternal schooling, associated with children’s temperament with more effortful control, explained 35% variability of the verbal IQ. High attention, associated with high maternal schooling and socioeconomic level, explained 37% variability of the performance IQ. The neonatal clinical variables (gestational age, birth weight, 5th-minute Apgar, and length of stay in neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) and hospital) were not predictors of cognitive outcomes. Conclusion: The majority of the children who were born preterm presented average or above-average cognitive and attentional performances at school age, demonstrating potential resources for learning. Taken together, attention and temperament, associated with maternal schooling and socioeconomic status, were predictors of cognitive outcomes of children born preterm at school age.

Assessment of Sensory Processing and Executive Functions in Childhood: Development, Reliability, and Validity of the EPYFEI

The aim of this study was to determine the psychometric properties of the “Assessment of Sensory Processing and Executive Functions in Childhood” (EPYFEI), a questionnaire designed to assess the sensory processing and executive functions of children aged between 3 and 11 years. The EPYFEI was completed by a sample of 1,732 parents of children aged between 3 and 11 years who lived in Spain. An exploratory factor analysis was conducted and showed five main factors: (1) executive attention, working memory, and initiation of actions; (2) general sensory processing; (3) emotional and behavioral self-regulation; (4) supervision, correction of actions, and problem solving; and (5) inhibitory. The reliability of the analysis was high both for the whole questionnaire and for the factors it is composed of. Results provide evidence of the potential usefulness of the EPYFEI in clinical contexts for the early detection of neurodevelopmental disorders, in which there may be a deficit of executive functions and sensory processing.

Resumo: Introdução: Estudos atuais apontam para as repercussões que as alterações de processamento sensorial trazem para o desenvolvimento neuropsicomotor infantil. Pouco se conhece sobre a influência dessas alterações no desenvolvimento cognitivo de lactentes, porém sabe-se que estas interferem negativamente no desempenho das atividades cotidianas e trazem prejuízos ao longo da vida do indivíduo. Objetivo: Avaliar a relação entre o processamento sensorial e o desenvolvimento cognitivo de lactentes, e a associação entre a prematuridade e o processamento sensorial dessa população. Método: Estudo de corte transversal realizado no Ambulatório de Puericultura do Hospital das Clínicas da UFPE, no período de dezembro de 2009 a agosto de 2010. A amostra consistiu de 182 lactentes de oito a 15 meses de idade, dos quais 54 (29,7%) nasceram prematuros, sendo feita a correção da prematuridade para 40 semanas de idade gestacional. Utilizou-se o Test of Sensory Functions in Infants (TSFI), para avaliar o processamento sensorial, e a Bayley Scales of Infant and Toddler Development III, na avaliação do desenvolvimento cognitivo. Resultados: Verificou-se uma frequência significantemente maior de processamento sensorial em risco e deficiente entre os lactentes nascidos pré-termo (37%) quando comparado ao processo sensorial dos nascidos a termo (21,9%). O atraso cognitivo foi significantemente maior (8,3%) entre os lactentes com processamento sensorial em risco e deficiente em relação aos com processamento sensorial normal (1,5%). Conclusão: A prematuridade foi considerada um fator de risco para distúrbio do processamento sensorial e os lactentes diagnosticados com este distúrbio apresentaram atraso cognitivo mais frequentemente. A prematuridade, isoladamente, não esteve associada ao atraso cognitivo.
