Oxidative state and oxidative metabolism of the heart from rats with adjuvant-induced arthritis

Abstract: The aim of the present work was to investigate, in a more extensive way, the oxidative state and parameters related to energy metabolism of the heart tissue of rats using the model of adjuvant-induced arthritis. The latter is a model for the human arthritic disease. Measurements were done in the total tissue homogenate, isolated mitochondria and cytosolic fraction. The adjuvant-induced arthritis caused several modifications in the oxidative state of the heart which, in general, indicate an increased oxidative … Show more

“…8 In addition to affecting the articular cartilage, rheumatoid arthritis also evokes marked inflammatory responses and oxidative stress in other organs, such as vascular tissue, liver, brain and the heart. [9][10][11][12] In principle, the pronounced antioxidant activity of yerba mate should be able to attenuate the oxidative stress caused by rheumatoid arthritis. 4,5 Similarly, yerba mate should equally be able to attenuate the inflammatory state if one takes into account its well documented anti-inflammatory activity.…”

“…The liver of rats with adjuvant-induced arthritis, for example, presents increased rates of oxygen uptake, inhibition of gluconeogenesis and stimulation of glycolysis, alterations in the urea cycle and modifications in calcium homeostasis (Fedatto-Jr et al, 1999Utsunomiya, Scaliante, Bracht, & Ishii-Iwamoto, 2013;Yassuda-Filho et al, 2003). Substantial oxidative stress and molecular damage has also been demonstrated to occur in the plasma, liver, brain and heart of both arthritic patients (Mateen, Moin, Khan, Zafar, & Fatima, 2016) and experimental animals Comar et al, 2013;Schubert et al, 2016;Wendt et al, 2015).…”

“…Rheumatoid arthritis is a systemic disease and in addition to the joints other organs are affected, such as brain, heart, lungs, and vascular tissue [McInnes and Schett, 2011]. The oxidative status is likewise changed in the serum blood of patients with rheumatoid arthritis and also in the liver, brain, and heart of rats with adjuvant arthritis [Lemarechal et al, 2006;Comar et al, 2013;Wendt et al, 2015;Bracht et al, 2016;Schubert et al, 2016].…”
