Pu-erh Tea Extract Attenuates Nicotine-Induced Foam Cell Formation in Primary Cultured Monocytes: An in Vitro Mechanistic Study

Abstract: In this study, the mechanisms by which pu-erh tea extract (PETE) attenuates nicotine-induced foam cell formation were investigated. Monocytes were purified from healthy individuals using commercial antibodies coated with magnetic beads. We found that the nicotine-induced (1-10 μM) expression of oxidized low-density lipoprotein receptors (ox-LDLRs) and α9-nAchRs in monocytes was significantly attenuated by 24 h of PETE (10 μg/mL; ∗, p < 0.05) cotreatment. Nicotine (1 μM for 24 h) significantly induced the expre… Show more

“…Many kinds of natural compounds have been tested for their ability to inhibit a9-nAChR expression, and we found that inhibition of the signals induced by this receptor significantly diminished the effects of smoking [3437]. Our previous study demonstrated that the estrogen-induced estrogen receptor is also promoted in nicotine-induced a9-nAChR activation [29].…”

“…The key production process of pu-erh tea is secondary fermentation, in which microorganisms play a very important role in producing the taste, color, fragrance, and functional components 2 . Pu-erh tea is not only a popular tea, but also a traditional Chinese medicine, which has many biological and biochemical effects, such as antiobesity 3 , antiviral 4 , antioxidative 5 , hepatoprotective 6 , hypoglycemic 7 and hypolipidemic 8 . In our research, we found that the water extract of pu-erh tea showed potential in vitro hypoglycemic and hypolipidemic effects.…”

“…Previous studies have demonstrated that Nic can be detected in the urine and plasma of the SHS, with less than 2 ng/ml for cotinine in urine and around 3 ng/ml in plasma . Moreover, direct exposure to NNK via cigarette smoking leads to detect NNK metabolite in plasma of smokers, range from Pico molar to Nano molar .…”
