Nonheterocytous cyanobacteria from Brazilian saline‐alkaline lakes

Abstract: Saline-alkaline lakes are extreme environments that limit the establishment and development of life. The Nhecolândia, a subregion of the Pantanal wetland in Brazil, is characterized by the existence of ~500 saline-alkaline lakes, which support an underexplored and rich diversity of microorganisms. In this study, unicellular and homocytous cyanobacteria from five saline-alkaline lakes were accessed by culture-dependent approaches. Morphological evaluation and analyses of near complete sequences (~1400 nt) of th… Show more

“…The phylogenetic reconstruction based on 16S rRNA sequences suggest that all heterocytous cyanobacteria (Nostocales) form a single monophyletic group (Henson et al , 2004a; Tomitani et al , 2006; Shih et al , 2013) and support the polyphyly of true branching cyanobacteria (Figure 4). In addition, our analysis corroborates other molecular data from 16S rRNA sequences that demonstrate a polyphyletic origin of the unicellular and filamentous homocytous strains (Figure 4) (Litvaitis, 2002; Valério et al , 2009; Andreote et al , 2014; Silva et al , 2014). …”

“…The saline lakes may also present different colors such as green, black, or crystalline, while the freshwater lakes present crystalline water due to the bloom of cyanobacteria (see example in Figure 1e). The Nhecolândia saline lakes tend to be more perennial, normally devoid of vegetation, and with high concentrations of cyanobacteria; on the other hand, the freshwater lakes are mostly temporarily affected by the flood pulse and have large amounts of aquatic macrophytes [7,13,29,68,69]. That explains why the GP model using the NDWI and MNDWI indexes presented the best correlation with the field-measured pH values.…”
