An innovative pedagogic course combining video and simulation to teach medical students about pediatric cardiopulmonary arrest: a prospective controlled study

Abstract: • Compliance by residents to pediatric resuscitation guidelines is low. • We developed an innovative pedagogic course combining an educational video and simulation. What is new: • Knowledge retention after the innovative course was better than after a traditional lecture. • Sixty-six students tested on their skills demonstrated better compliance to resuscitation guidelines.

“…In this respect, Drummond et al performed a combination of video and peer teaching in a blended design. 18 They included 385 medical students for a knowledge test and 66 students participated in a later student skills test. In terms of the later performances, students trained by a combination of video and peer teaching scored higher than a control group, but the innovative course was much more expensive.…”

“…There is mounting evidence supporting the effectiveness of this training methodology [1–5]. Recent publications report improved confidence and self-efficacy among training participants, as well as improved patient outcomes in Children’s Hospitals after implementation of SBMT programs [612]. Up until recently SBMT was scarce in continental Europe’s pediatric health care education [13].…”
