Intimate partner violence and the experience of early motherhood: A cross-sectional analysis of factors associated with a poor experience of motherhood

Abstract: exposure to partner violence is adversely associated with early motherhood, independent of other correlates of poor motherhood experience. Greater awareness of factors associated with intimate partner violence and mothering would enable health care professionals and policy makers to improve support for women and children experiencing violence.

In addition, it may affect motherhood and the way women connect and interact with their babies ( Hooker et al, 2016 ).…”

“…Similar rates of poor outcomes associated with IPV have been confirmed globally (World Health Organization, 2013). These circumstances likely put more strain on parenting, and recent research has found a strong association between parenting problems and IPV victimization (Hooker, Samaraweera Agius, & Taft, 2016). Thus, stress associated with being pregnant at a younger age and with pregnancy complications may strain the relationship thereby increasing the likelihood of violence.…”

“…Despite the focus on how IPV may impact parenting, less attention has been given to the experience of motherhood for women affected by IPV. A study of over 1500 mothers found IPV to be associated with lower levels of coping, satisfaction, and emotional well-being within the experience of mothering, independent of mental health and other sociodemographic factors (Hooker, Samaraweera, Agius, & Taft, 2016). The results of this study highlighted the emotional toll that IPV can have when mothering is targeted by their partner through control tactics (Lapierre, 2009; Peled & Gil, 2011; Radford & Hester, 2006).…”
