Simple Enucleation for Renal Tumors: Indications, Techniques, and Results

Abstract: Kidney cancer is the 13th most common malignancy worldwide with significant increase in Stage I renal cell cancer (RCC). Surgical excision by nephron sparing surgery (NSS) remains the treatment of choice for small renal masses (SRMs). One of the variants of partial nephrectomy is simple enucleation (SE) or tumor enucleation (TE). The present review comments on the indications and technical aspects of SE as well as its outcomes. SE/TE has shown both perioperative and oncologic satisfactory results, comparable t… Show more

“…ERASE is reported to offer more efficient suturing, a better anatomical plane, and a lower incidence of surgical entry into the renal sinus compared with RAPN . These factors may contribute to a shorter learning curve and yield consistently acceptable results (ie, with regard to warm ischaemia time (WIT), maximal preservation of the renal parenchyma, and complications) for ERASE …”

“…3,4 These factors may contribute to a shorter learning curve and yield consistently acceptable results (ie, with regard to warm ischaemia time (WIT), maximal preservation of the renal parenchyma, and complications) for ERASE. 5 Under these circumstances, standardizing the reporting of ERASE results not only regarding oncological safety but also in terms of perioperative outcome is significant for the comparison of different techniques. With ERASE performed in an increasing number of cases of highly complex renal tumours in recent years, we applied the trifecta system to analyse ERASE outcomes and evaluate the impact of learning curve and tumour anatomical characteristics on the outcomes.…”
