“…Seventeen results of the 27 studies revealed that patients with stroke had higher MPV than controls [10,12,25,27,28,34,35,39,41-43, [46][47][48]50]. Ten studies found no difference in MPV between patients and controls [14,15,28,29,35,36,38,45,49], and two studies demonstrated a higher MPV in the control group (Table I, Supplementary Table VI) [13,40]. The mean MPV for all publications was 9.8 fL (95% CI 9.4-10.1) for patients and 9.2 fL (95% CI, 8.8-9.6) for controls.…”

“…5,6 Activated platelets aggregate at sites of damaged endothelial cells and participate in the development of atherosclerotic lesions, which ultimately leads to intracranial bloodstream interruption by arterial thrombosis arising from plaque rupture. [7][8][9] Many investigators have elucidated that higher mean platelet volumes (MPVs) imply severer stroke and worse prognosis, [10][11][12] whereas lower platelet counts (PLTs) are presented in AIS patients, and platelets are largely expended with the formation and development of thrombosis. 13,14 White blood cells (WBCs) are also implicated in the pathophysiology of ischemic vascular disease.…”

“…In a study conducted by Farah and Samra (13) in 2018, no association was found between MPV values of stroke patients and development risk of a new stroke attack. In the study with 136 participants by Oz et al (14), it was found that MPV has no value in predicting the development of a cerebrovascular event in coronary artery disease. In addition, a previous study which compared MPV values of 70 first time atherothrombotic acute ischemic stroke patients, 50 transient ischemic attack patients, and 70 healthy individuals, no statistically significant difference was found between the groups (15).…”
