Joint toxicity of sediment-associated DDT and copper to a polychaete, Nereis succinea

Abstract: As major components in antifouling paints, both dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT) and copper are ubiquitous in estuarine sediment and have been detected at high concentrations in the harbors in South China. In the present study joint toxicity between DDT and copper to an estuarine polychaete, Nereis succinea, was examined using bioaccumulation potential, growth impairment and change in lipid peroxidation contents as sub-lethal endpoints. In general, the toxicity of DDXs (DDT and its metabolites) and copper… Show more

“…The decreased MI in rats exposed to malathion pesticide was reported 53 . As observed in several animal models, the genotoxicity is suggested to be mediated by the generation of oxidative stress associated with diminished acetylcholinesterase and GPX activities in addition to elevated SOD and CAT activities 55 59 .…”

“…The relatively high DDT / (DDE + DDD) ratio in the surface sediment (0.93) indicated additional source of DDTs other than possible soil erosion as well. Fresh input of DDTs has been previously reported in estuarine and coastal zones (Gong et al, 2007;Kim et al, 2008;Li et al, 2014c) and believed to be from by-products of dicofol and antifouling boat painting (Guo et al, 2009;Wang et al, 2015).…”

“…In this article we have decided to use ΣDDX (instead of ΣDDT) for the summed concentrations of the six related compounds (o,p′-DDD, o,p′-DDT, o,p′-DDE, p,p′-DDD, p,p′-DDE, and p, p′-DDT), as it has been the adopted option in many recent publications in order to avoid possible misunderstandings (He et al, 2014;Vanden Berghe et al, 2012;Wang et al, 2014;Weijs et al, 2010a,b). Concerning DDX isomers (e.g.…”
