Association of Markers of Inflammation with Sleep and Physical Activity Among People Living with HIV or AIDS

Abstract: This study examined associations of sleep and minutes spent in moderate-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) with C-reactive protein (CRP) and interleukin (IL)-6 among persons living with HIV (PLWH). Cross-sectional analyses (n=45) focused on associations of inflammatory outcomes (i.e., CRP and IL-6) with actigraph-derived sleep duration, latency, and efficiency; bedtime; wake time; and wake-after-sleep-onset; as well as MVPA. Least square means for CRP and IL-6 by levels of sleep and MVPA were computed from gene… Show more

“…This may also explain why we did not find a strong correlation between the composite OSA risk score and fatigue score. The pathogenesis of OSA in HIV may also be driven by inflammatory cytokines, 21,39,40 resulting in impaired neuronal control of upper airway musculature during sleep. In addition, other molecular and genomic attributes of HIV 41,42 may also explain the occurrence of certain sleep disorders in this population.…”

“…Trata-se de um processo ativo envolvendo múltiplos e complexos mecanismos fisiológicos e comportamentais em vários sistemas e regiões do sistema nervoso central (SNC). O sono normal é constituído pela alternância dos estágios REM (movimentos rápidos dos olhos) e NREM, caracterizado pelo sono profundo e de descanso (13)(14) .…”

“…Greater quality of social relationships [7] and life satisfaction has also been reported comparably to non-exercising PLHIV [8]. Lastly, some studies evidenced the ability of exercise to better antiretroviral therapy adherence [9] and to hinder anti-inflammatory consequences [10]. …”
