Application of strong transverse magneto-optical Kerr effect on high sensitive surface plasmon grating sensors

Abstract: A high sensitive sensor is demonstrated by exploiting strong transverse magneto-optical Kerr effect on a ferromagnetic surface plasmon grating. The surface plasmon grating, made of a hybridized Au/Fe/Au layer, exhibits a very dispersive Kerr parameter variation near the surface plasmon polariton (SPP) wavelength via coherent scattering of the SPP on the grating structure. Interrogating this Kerr parameter can be utilized for detecting chemical or biological objects in a fluid medium. The experiment results sho… Show more

“…Throughout the paper, when speaking about the quality factor we mean the ratio of the full width at half maximum (FWHM) of the resonance to its central wavelength. The recently demonstrated MO sensors 16 17 18 19 20 21 still have rather poor quality factor of both optical and magnetooptical resonances, but nevertheless they often show the resolution limit several times higher compared to the conventional SPR ones.…”

“…In one hand, the dielectric properties of the oxide affect the SPR Au response, and in the other hand its magnetic properties can be used for separation and/or pre-concentration of the analytes before SERS application. FANSs, in majority, and AFNSs, in minority have been thus developed for such a purpose [ 107 , 108 , 109 , 110 , 111 ]. They possess the advantages of convenient binding to biomolecules and easy separation using a magnetic field.…”

“…There has been an increasing research interest in magnetoplasmonic effects to improve SPR sensitivity (Sepúlveda et al 2006, Regatos et al 2010, Manera et al 2011, Chou et al 2014, Caballero et al 2016, Ignatyeva et al 2016, Grunin et al 2016, Maccaferri et al 2015. This mechanism was proposed by Sepúlveda et al (2006), where magneto-optical (MO) activity was combined with SPRs for decreasing the limit of detection of a Kretschmann-like SPR platform.…”
