“…According to previous studies, gum chewing was found to be effective to decrease time to first bowel sound, flatulence and the defecation after gastrointestinal surgeries (17)(18)(19). Safety and effectiveness of gum chewing in decreasing postoperative ileus and nausea have been shown in a previous study (15). However, our results did not show significant difference between groups in terms of time to first flatus and bowel movements.…”

Previous studies also compared groups for age, body mass index and the duration of operation (3,14,15). Additionally, previous studies showed the importance of surgical manipulation on postoperative intestinal functions (10,12,16).…”

“…In this randomized controlled trial, we assessed the effect of gum chewing on POI following liver transplantation. Previous reports were focused on the effect of sham feeding in colorectal surgeries and caesarian sections with a few studies in radical cystectomies and gynecologic surgeries . Our study is the first randomized controlled trial that evaluated the effect of gum chewing on POI in liver transplantation patients.…”

“…Previous reports were focused on the effect of sham feeding in colorectal surgeries 24,26 and caesarian sections 27,28 with a few studies in radical cystectomies 29 and gynecologic surgeries. 30 Our study is the first randomized controlled trial that evaluated the effect of gum chewing on POI in liver transplantation patients. Another notable aspect of our study is that we evaluated and compared the daily and cumulative calorie intake.…”
