Expression of monocyte subsets and angiogenic markers in relation to carotid plaque neovascularization in patients with pre-existing coronary artery disease and carotid stenosis

Abstract: In this pilot study classical monocytes (Mon1) represent the only monocyte subset predictive of the severity of carotid and systemic atherosclerosis, such as carotid intima-media thickness, degree of carotid stenosis, and presence of carotid intraplaque neovascularization.

“…In addition, previous data suggests that the intermediate subset secretes increased amounts of TNF-α in patients with CAD and therefore can exert proinflammatory functions5. Previous reports indicate that classical CD14 ++ CD16 − monocytes, however, can predict cardiovascular events in a randomly selected subject population within the Malmö Diet and Cancer Study8 and associate with subclinical systemic atherosclerosis and increased carotid intima-media thickness18. In addition, patient risk factors may affect monocyte subset populations.…”

“…Of five different measurements over time in this study, CD14 ++ CD16 + classical monocytes were most consistently (four out of five) associated with recurrent CVD events (100). In addition, the classical CD14 ++ CD16 + monocyte was significantly associated with carotid atherosclerosis and intraplaque neovascularization (104). In two other studies, the total monocyte count did not independently prognosticate mortality (74, 83).…”

“…Vulnerable coronary plaques are closely related to ACS, and carotid atherosclerostic plaques have a similar pathologic basis as coronary plaques. Neovascularization in plaques was identified after studies concerning its major characteristic of plaque instability and its status as an independent predictor of ACS, eventually resulting in plaque rupture and hemorrhage, with a close correlation with the occurrence of clinical cardiovascular events . Detecting the correlation between the degree of plaque enhancement and the density of neovascularization in plaques by contrast‐enhanced US can provide rating information for the risk of carotid plaques.…”
